Schools and studies

Finnish language courses

Finnish language courses are offered by some language schools in Hungary. Finnish language courses are also organized by the Kalevala Friendship Association operating in Budapest. Classes are held at the Deák Evangelical Secondary School (V., Sütő u. 1.); there are three levels. Please contact Kovács Ildikó (tel. +36 30 851 1440) for further information on the Association's language courses.

The Csokonai Vitéz Mihály Secondary School in Debrecen offers Finnish to be learnt as a second foreign lanugage for 4 years (e.g. besides English or German), then a maturity or state language examination can be taken from Finnish. Besides obligatory language classes, students can practise Finnish in study circles or they can learn about Finland in camps organized in Finnish schools, e.g. Kastellin lukio in Oulu or Arkadian yhteislyseo in Klaukkala. The most diligent students receive grants to the intensive Finnish language courses of the Jyväskylä summer university.

Finnish studies at the Universities

Students can learn Finnish language and culture both as a major and minor specialty. Besides, the syllabus of students majoring in Hungarian includes familiarization with the basics of a Finno-Ugric language, most frequently Finnish.
